Fontanini Gifts are prized for their lifelike sculpting, meticulous hand painting and attention to detail. Roman Fontanini Italian Nativities include figurines and accompanying structures in seven different sizes ranging from tiny miniatures to nearly life-size pieces; and a wide selection of ornaments, musicals, and other giftware featuring Fontanini art. According to tradition, Italy was the birthplace of the nativity scene. In 1223, St Francis of Assisi first created a living nativity set using local farmers and animals in a stable setting. St Francis wanted to show ordinary people that Jesus was just like them. The entire village joined in the celebration, which inspired the custom of keeping miniature carved figures in family homes. The custom has grown to the center of the Christmas celebration. Traditionally, Fontanini nativity sets include characters beyond the core nativity scene, to represent people of the village. They are adorned in accessories and clothing to illustrate their role in village life. Fontanini figurines include current, retired, and limited edition catholic statues, christmas collectables, and figures depicting the Life of Christ.
